159a. Thorax with distinct anterior granulation, the granules small except for a band along suture of obviously larger granules. Comb of segment VIII golden to golden-brown; anal lobes evenly coloured or paler towards base. Sternite I smooth or with a few scattered spinules.
The species of Chironomus Pe4 have apparently inseparable pupae, see: Chironomus balatonicus (Lake Balaton, Hungary), and:

159b. Thorax more or less smooth. Comb of segment VIII brown; anal lobes brown with margin transparent for a great part of their length. Sternite I with a triangular patch of small points postero-laterally.
