Diagnosis
Exuviae 6.0-9.1mm long (m=7.7mm, n=21) (004-2.jpg).
Cephalothorax: Thoracic horn 645-885µm long (m=761µm, n=17); ThR 1.4-2.0 (m=1.7, n=16). (004d.jpg)
Abdomen: No dark mark on segment I. VIII projecting laterally posteriad by 1.10-1.32 of length segment VIII (m=1.26, n=25). Segments (II)III-VIII with a lateral fringe of taeniae, segment VIII with 13-92 taeniae (m=58, n=41) (004-2.jpg).
Anal segment: Anal lobes short, rounded, the margins smooth, shorter than the median length of segment VIII (0.5-0.83:1) (004e.jpg). Anal lobe ratio 1.1-1.7 (m=1.4, n=25).

Distribution
Holarctic species: widespread in Europe, circum-Mediterranean.

Ecological notes
Ponds, shallow lakes, ditches, dykes and occasionally streams, commonest where there is a slow flow.
Larvae in muddy sediments of slow-flowing or stagnant waters in lowland and secundary mountains (Janecek, 1999a).
