163a. Sternites III and IV without anterior or lateral shagreen bands. Cephalic tubercles small with conspicuous seta. (Hook row II with about 100 hooks.)

Chironomus salinarius

163b. Sternites III and IV with an anterior transverse band of fine shagreen which laterally spreads posteriorly for the sternite length on III, and for about 2/3rds sternite length on IV. Cephalic tubercles large. (Hook row with fewer hooks despite the larger size of the specimen.)
