Stictochironomus caffrarius

Diagnosis (Material in coll. ZSM)
Exuviae 5.4-6.9mm long (n=4).
Cephalothorax: Cephalic tubercles robust, pointed, 150-175µm long (n=4) (117m.jpg). Frontal setae 150-155µm long (n=3). Thoracic horn very much branched, branches much shorter than half the length of the abdomen. Thorax with conspicuously large granules near suture (112b.jpg). Posterior thoracic mound with a cylindrical rounded projection at each end and a similar projection displaced a little further forward of the mound. Wing sheath with a small, simple or bifid projection near base (117l.jpg).
Abdomen: Length hook row II 0.63-0.67x width tergite (n=3); hooks 45-49 (n=4). Anterior transverse point bands of tergites II-VI separated from the median patches by a bare space, anterior points not conspicuously stronger. At least segments III and IV with an apical band of points which may be medially interrupted. Vortex present. Comb of segment VIII composed of sturdy teeth around the apico-lateral corner continuing forwards along the lateral margin as a series of progressively narrower, longer teeth to the base of the fourth lateral taenia (117n.jpg). Lateral taeniae of segments V-VIII: 3,3,4,4.
Anal segment: Fringe of anal lobe with 47-63 taeniae (n=4).
