Chironomus balatonicus

Author: Dévai, Wülker and Scholl, 1983

Diagnosis
Exuviae 11.6, 15.5mm long (n=2).
Colour: Golden to golden-brown.
Cephalothorax: Cephalic tubercles LxB 183x167, 213x150µm (n=2). Thoracic horn much branched, basal ring of horn 250x90, 280x125µm. Tracheal patch of thoracic horn without an "eye", patch 180x47, 217x65µm (n=2); 22 tracheoles across; 2.5-3.0µm in diameter (n=1). Thorax with distinct anterior granulation, the granules small except for a band along suture of obviously larger granules. Thoracic granulation well-developed anteriorly, otherwise restricted to a mid-lateral patch, not reaching the suture dorsally.
Abdomen: Hook row II entire, length of row 0.56x width tergite (n=1); hooks 98-103 (n=3). Armament of tergites II-VI not strongly waisted, in the form of an undivided, usually extensive patch of strong points, the points in each segment increasing in size posteriorly. The point patches increase in extent from tergite II to V, but on VI the patch is more or less reduced. Sternite I smooth or with a few scattered spinules. Shagreen of sternites III and IV forming a lateral longitudinal band on each side. Comb of segment VIII golden to golden-brown, with 11-14 elongate teeth (n=3); comb on the end of an elongate ventral cuticular mound which exceeds appreciably the apico-lateral corner of the segment. Lateral taeniae of segments V-VIII: 4,4,3/4,4/5.
Anal segment: Anal lobes evenly coloured or paler towards base. Fringe of anal lobe with 179-222 taeniae (n=3).

Note: Reared material of known karyotype from P. Michailova. This form and Chironomus prasinus have apparently inseparable pupae. See also note on colour under Chironomus nuditarsis.
