Author: (Linnaeus, 1758)
Diagnosis (Material leg. P. Michailova)
Exuviae 14.3-19.4mm long (m=16.5mm, n=10).
Colour: Exuviae golden to golden-brown, very rarely brown.
Cephalothorax: Cephalic tubercles LxB 213x177-275x225µm (n=8). Frontal setae 87-110µm long (n=5). Basal ring of thoracic horn 250x100-370x155µm; tracheal patch 200x50-310x90µm (n=11); 20-30 tracheoles across (n=5); 3µm diameter.
Abdomen: Hook row II entire, length of row 0.54-0.61x width tergite (n=6); 68-113 hooks (n=10). Armament of tergites II-VI not strongly waisted and with the posterior transverse band not successively increasing in extent to tergite VI; usually reduced on VI. Sternites III and IV without shagreen. Pleura of segment IV with a few scattered spinules, or none. Comb of segment VIII with 12-26 elongate teeth (n=10), set on the end of an elongate ventral cuticular mound which exceeds appreciably the apico-lateral corner of the segment (100h.jpg).
Anal segment: Fringe of anal lobe with 163-285 taeniae (m=245, n=11).
Note: No differences have been detected between the three pharate examples provided and the pupae of Chironomus bonus, but some minor characters are not visible due to the (cleared) pharate adult within. It may still be possible to find distinguishing features. Ch. bonus is so far only recorded for the far east of the western Palaearctic, so it would be reasonable to assume that pupal exuviae keying here are plumosus over most of the Region covered by this key.
