Diagnosis
Exuviae 4.9-5.8mm long (m=5.5mm, n=15).
Cephalothorax: Thoracic horn 317-445µm long (n=5); ThR 12.7, 13.4 (n=2). Thoracic horn seta 60, 85µm long (n=3), setae distally on horn (131k.jpg).
Abdomen: Tergite III without spines. Tergite IV with a transversely broad oval, rounded point patch; rarely double. Point patches of tergite V paired. ArR IV : V 1.0 : 0.6-0.9 (n=7). Comb of segment VIII 34-77µm wide (n=7); with 7-16 marginal teeth (m=11, n=12). Lateral taeniae of segments II-VIII: 0(1),1(0,2),2,3,4(2,3),4,5.
Note: Whereas this species usually has a single point patch on tergite IV and a double patch on tergite V, both of those on IV and V may be double or both may be single. It further varies in two directions: some populations show a tendency to produce a distinct anterior pair of point patches on tergite III, while others show a development of a pair of point patches on tergite VI, frequently only well-developed on one side. An extreme form is represented by one of Thienemann's "Paratanytarsus sp. Torneträsk II" (Thienemann, 1951a: p. 620) where on tergite III there is a well-developed anterior point patch on one side, on IV there is a single anterior point patch, on V a broad transversely oval point patch with hardly an indication of a median separation and on VI a well-developed pair of patches.
Note: The fusion of the point patches on tergite V and the development of patches on VI appears to be associated with cold water.
Anal segment: Fringe of anal lobe with 18-28 taeniae (m=24.9, n=12).
