Corynoneura scutellata

Diagnosis (in part after Hirvenoja and Hirvenoja, 1988a - in italics)
Exuviae 1.7-2.2mm long (m=1.9mm, n=13).
Cephalothorax: Frontal setae long and taeniate; 4-5µm wide, 165-220µm long. Dorsocentral seta 3 long and taeniate; about 4µm wide, 120-150µm long. 1-4 short pearl rows, often weak (036d.jpg).
Abdomen: Dorsal shagreen on segments II-IX of minute points. Sternite I armed antero-laterally, the spinules are smaller than those on sternite II (036g.jpg). Sternite II with long colourless spinules, 10µm or more long. Sternite VI with points of much the same size as each other and arranged in distinct horizontal rows of three, four or even more points.
Anal segment: Anal lobe ratio 1.2-1.5 (m=1.4, n=10). Anal fringe complete, with 31+1 to 40+1 taeniae (m=35.5+1, n=22). Apical setae of anal lobes taeniate, anterior apical seta at taeniae 13-19 (m=16, n=20).

Note: Corynoneura innupta Edwards in Langton, 1984: one of the parthenogenetic strains of this species which has smooth sternite I - such specimens are very difficult to distinguish from females of the subsequent bisexual species in the key.

Holarctic species: widespread in Europe.
